While loading cargo at anchorage, one of the vessel’s cargo cranes sustained damage when the crane jib collapsed. This incident caused damage not only to the jib itself but also to the main deck below, a section of the side shell, and part of the open hatch cover for the cargo hold that was being served at the time. The cargo grab in use was detached and lost to the sea. Fortunately, no injuries occurred.
With the support of a floating crane, the vessel was able to complete its cargo operations. Afterward, it proceeded to its destination port to discharge the cargo and was then removed to a repair facility in Shanghai, China, for permanent repairs.
We were appointed by the Hull & Machinery Underwriters to oversee the repair process and to carefully assess and determine the nature, extent and costs associated with the damage. Throughout the repairs, we worked closely with all parties involved, providing regular updates and detailed progress reports to ensure everyone stayed well-informed.
Once the repairs were finished and the assured submitted their claim under the insurance policy, we carried out a detailed review of all the invoices provided. Our analysis helped clarify the responsibilities and financial implications for each party. This case highlights our dedication to clear communication, careful oversight, and fair claims handling, even in challenging marine situations.
