Investigation of Main Engine Damage Caused by Contaminated Bunkers – Kobe, Japan

November 9, 2024

We were engaged to investigate a significant mechanical failure on board a vessel that sustained extensive damage to all cylinder units of her main engine due to the consumption of contaminated bunkers. Following initial temporary repairs undertaken by the crew, the vessel was removed to Kobe, Japan, for comprehensive permanent repairs performed by the engine makers’ service engineers. This process restored the vessel’s full operational capability and allowed for a detailed assessment.

Appointed by the Underwriters, we attended the vessel in Kobe to thoroughly examine the nature, cause, and extent of the casualty. Throughout the repair process, diligent oversight was maintained to ensure accuracy and transparency in all findings.

Upon completion of the repairs, a comprehensive and detailed report was submitted to the principals, capturing all critical aspects of the incident. The Assured’s claim invoices were meticulously reviewed, analyzed, and annotated to facilitate a fair and efficient resolution. Our commitment to precision, thorough investigation, and clear communication underscores our standing as a trusted partner in the management of marine insurance claims.
