Hatch cover damage

January 21, 2021

During cargo operations, on closing of a hatch cover (folding type) the aft panel hatch cover end hinge plates and pin holders on both sides broke off from their pedestals. The hatch cover fell onto the coaming and was derailed from the trackway. All four hydraulic cylinders were deformed and bent. The Vessel sailed to Singapore for permanent repairs.

We were appointed by the Vessel’s H&M Underwriters to attend the Vessel and investigate the nature, cause and extent of the casualty and costs involved. Our correspondent in Singapore attended onboard for the damage survey together with surveyors from the Vessel’s Classification, her LoH Underwriters and hatch cover repair specialists and hydraulics specialists. Follow-up surveys were effected at the workshop to establish the condition and monitor repairs of damaged components.

Repairs were followed up until completion and regular updated reports were provided to our principals.
